Short summary
Prosthetic joint infection is a devastating and expensive complication of hip and knee arthroplasty. Public institutions equipped for emergency management of these cases treat both public and private arthroplasty patients, resulting in increased costs to the public healthcare system. We quantify overall and proportional costs, and discuss the causes and effects of this problem, as hospital wait lists and health costs should be controlled.
